Our churches act as collection points for the Maidstone Day Centre’s Food Share Scheme. During the Winter months we ensure appropriate food stuffs, clothing and bedding are provided to Maidstone Churches Winter Shelter, which works closely with Maidstone Day Centre. Whilst we do collect, we are not a Distribution Point for Food Share at the present time. The Pilgrims Way Churches hold a variety of social events and functions throughout the year. Some are specifically aimed at our congregations but most are not. From Cream Teas to Banjo’s and various things in between, we work with our ‘Friends of...’ Associations to raise much needed funds to support the fabric of our buildings and enable us to continue working within the communities around us.

In line with the Church of England as a whole, most of our Churches are medieval buildings. They are not built necessarily for warmth or comfort, which may come as a shock to some of you reading this.

Of the approximately 16,200 churches the Church of England has responsibility for, more than 12,000 are listed. Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive of English Heritage, once suggested ‘The Parish churches of England are some of the most sparkling jewels in the precious crown that is our historic environment.’ This is a heritage we seek to maintain, but also to develop, on a limited budget. The Pilgrims Way Churches team recognise the need to maintain the heritage but believe we should also seek to sympathetically develop our buildings as resources for the communities they serve.

To do this, we need to maintain our buildings. Much of this does not require money, it simply needs our time and general maintenance skills. The skills needed to clear guttering and check the security of downpipes. To make sure drainage is cleared of leaves and other detritus. Perhaps to come along and help cut back vegetation in the Churchyards or replace (or secure) damaged pathways.

Stewardship is, first and foremost, about living a generous life. It is an integral part of what it means to be Christian. Although the Pilgrims Way Churches are part of the National Church of England, we do not receive an income from the government. Our churches, beautiful and historic as many of them are, only continue to exist because of the astonishing levels of generosity that generations of worshippers have shown. They are living, breathing, worshipping communities which will continue to serve the villages surrounding them. But to do so they need your support.
